Serving Foster and Adoptive Families
In 2015, the Department of Health and Human Services reached out to Sheila Barnaby and asked her if she would like to purchase items for a child at Christmas. The next year, she went back to them to find out if there is a way that she could help with that Christmas program that she had participated in the year before. It turned out that it had not actually been a program, instead it was just one employee that made sure that all the kids had something to open on Christmas. Sheila was not satisfied with that answer and went on to create Fostering Joy, a program that matches a sponsor from the community to a child in foster care.
Fostering Joy was a success, there was great excitement from the community, so Sheila used that momentum. She had a Back to School shoe drive as well as a
diaper and wipe drive. In September of 2016, Sheila received a message from the Foster Closet of Michigan, they had seen what she was doing and suggested that she join them and open a foster closet in Gratiot County. Within a week, the St Louis First Church of God had offered a space, and the Gratiot Branch of the foster closet was opened. Joining the Foster Closet of Michigan gave the benefit of being a 501(c)3.
Over the next year, the Foster Closet continued to grow. It became clear that being a part of a state wide organization was not in the best interest of the community. With the blessing of the Foster Closet of Michigan, Sheila compiled a local board of directors and applied to become an independent 501(c)3. In November, the Mid Michigan Foster and Adoptive Coalition was created.
